Hooking internet up with laptop?

I Am Currently livin with my mother while i'm having remodeling done to my household. I Have a lapop but no internet at my mothers house. Is there a card or something i can buy to get internet there? Also what is a router a friend told me i could use my internet from my house witha router?? Sorry i'm computer illiterate Plz help
