Home Air Filter differences?

I don't know what to look for when buying a home air filter. All I do know is to stay away from ozone and ionizers because they can emit more pollution in my home and this is exactly what I'm trying to get removed. Why would someone construct an air filter that causes more pollution? Is there a brand that is better than another? Has anyone had good luck with air filters?
