98 actually made in 97 chev astro awd astro van. having trouble with transmission stops traveling after about?

300 yards. engine continues to run fine, but wil not travel in any gear unless I turn motor off and restart. then will travel once again for a short time. Transmission fluid is clean and not burnt, but when I checked the engine oil was dry. My bad !!! I had been late and drove at high speed for several miles just before this all began. I put engine oil in but am still having the problem. could this be due to running dry my engine oil and if so will pulling pan and priming and oil change make any difference
